Hot Topic! With Professor Larry Lowenthal

Professor Lowenthal returns to the Sudbury Senior Center at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, October 24 & Tuesday, October 31 to discuss the North Korea Crisis and the Climate Change Debate. Join us for an educated review of these topics, including a deep background on the North Korea situation and a discussion of the beliefs on both sides of the Climate Debate as well as the science behind it. Repair Café

Do you have small items around the house that need to be repaired or need something sharpened? The Repair Café brings together volunteers who like to fix things with people who have broken items that need fixing. The idea is to reuse/recycle and to offer people the opportunity to learn how to fix an item, or to just get help in fixing it, in addition to being a fun community event. Join us at the Senior Center Gym on Saturday, October 28, from 9:00 AM -12:00 PM. Help is needed if you can volunteer as a fix-it person, with check in or set-up, please leave a message for Janet Lipkin Volunteer Coordinator at the Sudbury Senior Center at 978-443-3055.
Need a Ride?
Free transportation is available for the following events around town: “Fall Town Meeting” at L-S High School on Monday, October 16 at 7:30 PM, and for the “Repair Café” at the Sudbury Senior Center on Saturday, October 28 from 9 AM-12 PM. Please contact the Sudbury Senior Center at senior@sudbury.ma.us or call 978-443-3055 for a transportation registration form, complete the form, and let us know you’d like to reserve a ride 2 business days before the event.
Brush and Easel
On Monday, October 16, 2017 from 10:00-12:00, Brush and Easel will be at the Sudbury Senior Center for a history lecture and a painting class. During the history lecture, we will discuss two 20th century female artists, Niki de Saint Phalle a French-American sculptor and painter and Zinaida Yevgenyevna Serebriakova a Russian painter The PowerPoint presentation will outline their similarities and differences, the context of their art making and the impact of their art on the future art styles of the 20th century. The second part of the lecture is devoted to experimental art making. The cost of program is $10.00 which includes all materials. Foxwoods Trip – November 6, 2017
The 2017 Foxwoods trips will continue on a quarterly basis with Deanna Sklenak and Ron Ragno organizing and promoting them—thanks Deanna and Ron! Please sign up early, so that we can be sure to have enough participants to cover the bus fee. The next trip is on Monday, November 6, 2017. Soup’s On!
What are the latest scams to be wary of? Come to the Sudbury Senior Center on Thursday, October 26, 2017. Soup will be served at 12:00 noon and the presentation will start promptly at 12:45 PM. Natalie Roberge, Certified Fraud Analyst of Sudbury will be here to talk about the latest scams and how to avoid being ensnared! Please order your soup by Tuesday, October 24 at 4:00 PM.
The Savvy Caregiver Workshop
The Savvy Caregiver workshop is a FREE six-session training series for family and friends who are active caregivers! It will take place 6 Mondays, October 30 - December 11 (No class on Nov 6) from 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM. Taking care of a person living with Alzheimer’s or related dementia is specialized work. To do this work successfully, caregivers need specific skills, knowledge, and a positive attitude that helps them to care for themselves as well as their loved ones. Please register for this workshop early, maximum enrollment of 12. Provided by BayPath Elder Services, with grant support from Administration For Community Living. Volunteer Open House
Volunteer Open House at the Sudbury Senior Center on Wednesday, October 18, 2017 from 2:30 – 4:00 PM. This is a wonderful opportunity to socialize, take part in a raffle, get your volunteer lanyard name badge, fill out any needed Volunteer paperwork, and meet our new Volunteer Coordinator, Janet Lipkin. Refreshments will be served.
Men’s Breakfast!
Come on down to the Sudbury Senior Center on Thursday, October 19, at 9:00 AM for a delicious hot breakfast. Reserve your spot for the semi-annual Men’s Breakfast put on by our excellent Men’s Breakfast Team! Pancakes (plain, blueberry and pumpkin!), hot sausage, fresh fruit, juice and coffee! Life Reimagined! AARP Workshop
AARP is offering a free seminar, “Life Reimagined” at the Sudbury Senior Center on Tuesday, October 17, 2017 - 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM. Life is full of checkups. So what about a checkup for your Life? Introducing the, “Life Reimagined Checkup”, a free 2 hour experience to help you understand where you are in life and what your next move could be. Led by Gordon Szerlip, a trained Life Reimagined Guide, this event brings people together to talk about the challenges and choices they are facing and how to make the most of them. Share your experiences and get inspired about your possibilities.

Women of the Greatest Generation
The Just Peace Players will tell the stories of women who lived through the Second World War in their own words. Their performance “Women of the Greatest Generation: Stories of Faith, Hope Love and Courage” will take place on October 18, 2017 at 1:00 PM at the Sudbury Senior Center. Teen Tech
Our next Teen Tech will be held at the Sudbury Senior Center on October 25, 2017 from 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM. Computer savvy Lincoln Sudbury high school students will assist you with all your technology needs. Write down your questions and bring your equipment chargers with you. Comfort Food Caring Café – Oct 23
The Sudbury Senior Center is offering a free Comfort Food Caring Café on Monday, October 23 from
12:00 PM – 2:00 PM. Caregivers and their loved ones with memory challenges are invited to gather for a delicious lunch, entertainment, conversation, arts, music and laughter! LINC - Learning Intergenerational Community
New after school program starting up on Thursday, October 26, 2017 connecting 4th and 5th graders with adults 55+. Students and adults will have an unforgettable experience with this teacher-led curriculum for curious kids of all ages. Six structured after school sessions from 3:30-5:00 PM beginning in October 2017 at Sudbury Public Schools. Adults 55+ are invited to participate. Short Story Discussion Group
Please join the Short Story Discussion Group on the 2 & 4 Thursday of the month from 1:00 - 2:00 PM at the Sudbury Senior Center. Lois Leav, who is a book and story lover, will facilitate the discussion. Senior Notes Singing Group
This Senior Notes singing group meets on the first and third Thursday of the month at 12:45 PM. Lift your voice and lift your spirits by singing. Gather with us in Room 1 and we will provide you with lyrics (and sheet music for those who would like it) for a selection of familiar popular songs to share. Mostly, we find a good starting note and sing a cappella, but sometimes we have recorded accompaniment to carry us along. We take suggestions for songs to add to our choices and invite all to join the fun! Please call the Senior Center to sign up at 978-443-3055.
Put n Take Help Needed – Earn a Tax Abatement
Applications are now available for the Sudbury Senior and Veteran Tax Work-off Programs at the Sudbury Senior Center. Eligible Sudbury seniors or veterans may be able to work in a Town Department and “earn” a tax abatement for the following year. This year, there are Sudbury Seniors and Veterans working at the Town Clerk’s office, the Sudbury Senior Center, the IT Department, DPW and the Sudbury Public Schools.
In 2017, the abatement will be $11.00 an hour or $1,100 for 100 hours of work. They are particularly in need of workers at the Put ‘n’ Take. Note: Veterans should submit a copy of their discharge papers along with their application. All applications should be delivered to Sudbury Senior Center, Tax Work-off Program, 40 Fairbank Road, Sudbury, MA 01776. Relax on Monday afternoon with a movie at the Sudbury Senior Center. Showing on October 16, “The Holler’s” PG-13 - 1.5 hrs and on November 20, “A United Kingdom” PG-13 – 2 hrs . Flu Clinic at Sudbury Senior Center – October 12
Flu Season is upon us. Flu is caused by the influenza viruses. It spreads easily from person to person usually beginning in December and lasting until April. Remember your best protection is an annual flu vaccination. Phyllis Schilp BSN, RN Board of Health Nurse Sudbury Health Department has organized a flu vaccine clinic for adults at the Sudbury Senior Center on Thursday, October 12 from 11am-2pm and 5pm-7pm. Please remember to make an appointment by calling the Sudbury Senior Center at 978-443-3055. When you come to your appointment bring your insurance card and wear short sleeves.
Vet Talk
The next Vet Talk will take place on Wednesday, November 8 at 9:30 AM at the Sudbury Senior Center. All Veterans are welcome to stop by for some coffee and conversation. Please call the Sudbury Senior Center at 978-443-3055 to sign up. The Vet Talk group meets once a month on the 2nd Wednesday of the month.
Turn the Page Book Group
Join “Turn the Page” book group on the 2nd Wednesday of every month from 1:00 – 2:00 PM. Even if you have not read the book! The following book will be discussed on November 8, “Born a Crime” by Trevor Noah. Please call the Sudbury Senior Center at 978-443-3055 with questions, or just drop in!

The Corvette Doo Wop Review – sign up NOW
November 8, 2017 – cost is $90. Take a rollicking ride through the good old days of Rock & Roll and listen to the music of the 1950’s Doo Wop era. Lunch will be at Lake Pearl in Wrentham.
Wright’s Farm and La Salette Lights
Thursday, December 7, 2017: cost is $60. A delightful holiday tour combining a full course “all you can eat” lunch at Wright’s Chicken Farm Restaurant and the magnificent Christmas lights and chorus at La Salette Shrine.

Thursday Pizza and a Movie
Grab a cold drink and enjoy a snack while watching a movie at the Sudbury Senior Center. Pizza will be served at 12:00 PM – Movie starts at 12:30 PM. We are showing on October 19, “Founder”, Pg-13, 2 hrs. The story of Ray Kroc who turned Richard and Maurice McDonalds fast food eatery, McDonald’s into the biggest restaurant business in the world. Please call the Sudbury Senior Center at (978) 443-3055 to order your pizza by 10:00 AM on the day of the movie ($1.25 a slice). NOTE: Please be sure to review movie descriptions and subject matter prior to attending a movie. On occasion, we will show an R rated movie. Movies can be rated R due to language, violence or sexual content.
FISH Volunteers needed
F.I.S.H. NEEDS DRIVERS! FISH. (Friends in Services Helping) is a volunteer program that provides transportation for Sudbury residents to medical appointments, when their family and friends are not available. The volunteer drivers are under no obligation to accept any assignment unless it fits with their schedules. There is no monthly or weekly requirement. F.I.S.H. is a great way to help your neighbors in need. If you are willing to become a volunteer driver, please call Janet Lipkin at the Sudbury Senior Center at 978-443-3055.
