OUTDOOR PLAY SERIES: An Evening With Abolitionist & Suffragist Abby Hutchinson (IN-PERSON)
Tuesday, August 17, 6:30pm
Popular songs are a wonderful window for looking into social movements of America's past, as shown by singer/actress Deborah Anne Goss in her program: "Abby Hutchinson’s Sweet Freedom Songs." Deborah performs as New Hampshire-born abolitionist, suffragist, and singer Abby Hutchinson, who became famous singing anti-slavery songs with her brothers as ‘The Hutchinson Family Singers’ during the 1840's. There is a direct connection between the abolition movement and the campaign for woman suffrage, as the stories and songs in this lively program illustrate. There may be opportunities for audience participation, and words for some of the song choruses are provided. This living history performance/concert will take place on the library's back lawn. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own blankets or chairs. In case of inclement weather, the performance will be rescheduled for later in August. Sponsored by the Friends of the Library.

Dirty Old Town, the first of five books in the Shane Cleary series from Level Best Books, was published in January 2020. His short stories have appeared in numerous anthologies. Valjan has been listed for the Fish Prize three times, shortlisted for the Bridport Prize, and received an Honorable Mention for the Nero Wolfe Black Orchid Novella Contest in 2018. CORNING AUTHOR SERIES: 'Spin: A Novel Based on a (Mostly) True Story' (ON ZOOM)
Wednesday, August 18, 7pm
Join bestselling author Peter Zheutlin for a presentation on his new book, Spin: A Novel Based on a (Mostly) True Story, via Zoom. Ride away on a 'round-the-world adventure of a lifetime—with only a change of clothes and a pearl-handled revolver—in this transcendent novel inspired by the life of Annie Londonderry. Who was Annie Londonderry? She captured the popular imagination with her daring ‘round the world trip on two wheels. It was, declared The New York World in October of 1895, “the most extraordinary journey ever undertaken by a woman.” But beyond the headlines, Londonderry was really Annie Cohen Kopchovsky, a young, Jewish mother of three small children, who climbed onto a 42-pound Columbia bicycle and pedaled away into history. Zheutlin, a descendent of Annie, brilliantly probes the inner life and seeming boundless courage of this outlandish, brash, and charismatic woman. In SPIN, this remarkable heroine and her marvelous, stranger-than-fiction story is vividly brought to life for a new generation. Sponsored by the Corning Foundation. Register HERE.
