Car Crash Cuts Power, Sends Loker Students to Middle School

A morning car crash damaged a transformer on Loker Street and sent kindergartners at Loker School to Wayland Middle School.

Students, teachers and staff at the Loker School found themselves on buses headed to Wayland Middle School Thursday morning after a car crash cut the school's power.

Wayland Police Chief Robert Irving said a one-car crash into a utility pole at 40 Loker Street cut power to a wide swath of Wayland at 9:01 a.m. Thursday.

With no estimate as to when power would be restored, the school system quickly developed a plan to transport Loker students, all kindergartners, and their teachers to WMS.

Diane Marobella at the superintendent's office said bus drivers were in the midst of a meeting in Wayland when they received word that their services would be needed mid-day.

By 11:30 a.m., Loker's population had been transported to Wayland Middle and settled into seventh grade classrooms that are vacant this week as their regular occupants take their annual trip to Cape Cod, Marobella said.

According to the front office at WMS, that school also lost power briefly and had to convert to generator power. The ground power has since returned.

Loker's students and staff will complete their days at WMS, with pickup occurring from the middle school at the regular 12:20 p.m. and 2:45 p.m. times.

Pickup for Wayland Middle School students will proceed as usual.

Irving said that Loker Street will remain closed while Nstar works to fix the damaged pole and restore power. The current estimate stands at about three hours or around 2:30 p.m.
