ICYMI: Wayland Schools Start Times To Change After Vote

The school committee voted 4-1 in favor of changing school start times. Some schools will start earlier, others later.

WAYLAND, MA — Wayland students will have a significant change in schedule next year, as the Wayland school committee voted to change start times for the elementary, middle and high schools. Each is being shifted about an hour.

After the 4-1 vote during the long public meeting, Wicked Local reported, the elementary schools will now start at 7:55 a.m., the high school at 8:35 a.m. and the middle school at 8:40 a.m.

High school and middle school students will rejoice, as they can expect about another hour in the morning to do what teens do, which is probably sleeping. Elementary students will start about an hour earlier, but they're up anyway, right?

Quips aside, sleep did play a big role in the decision, according to the Wicked Local report. Kids six to 12 should get nine to 12 hours of sleep daily, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. For teens 13 to 18 years old, the AAP recommends eight to 10 hours daily.

The process to change the start times began with an Oct. 10 meeting for parents. Four more meetings later, on Monday, Nov. 19, they made the decision.
