Where Do the Mainstone Farm Cows Go in the Winter?

No question is too small, so we were thrilled when we got this light-hearted question recently.

"My friends and I have been wondering where the cows from Hamlen Farm have been during the winter... Surely not big news but my 2-year-old keeps asking."

We took "Hamlen Farm" to actually be Mainstone Farm and went right to the source for the answer.

Pauline Henderson, owner of those cows at Mainstone Farm, assured Patch that the cows are safe.

"In the late fall, early winter, we put them on winter pasture," Henderson said. "It's closer to the houses. It's easier for us to care for them."

Henderson said the winter pasture features shelter that "Keeps them more out of the elements, so they're not so exposed."

In about six to eight weeks, the 60 or so cows will return to their spring pasture and, when they do, you could see some babies running around.

Henderson said the cows are calving right now and 25-30 calves could be joining the herd throughout the next several months.
