Wayland Storm Center: No Word on Schools, Some Flights Getting In, Out

[10:40 a.m.] The MBTA will remain shut down throughout Sunday, and officials are saying the hope it's up and running for Monday morning's commute. 

In other transportation news, Logan Airport is digging out and some flights are getting in and out of Boston. Call ahead to check on your flight if you have one scheduled today.

As for Wayland Public Schools, there's no word yet on whether schools will be in session tomorrow. We will keep you posted.

[5:30 p.m.] The driving ban ended at 4 p.m., and Patch took a trip through the main roads of Wayland to assess the situation.

• Route 20 is in good shape from Rte. 128 all the way through Wayland (we didn't go any further).
• Route 30, however, is still a bit treacherous. The road is mostly snow coated.
• A handful of folks were out taking pictures and just walking around. Be safe if you head out.
• The snow banks are high and the roads are narrow. Turning is a bit blind at times, so take it slow if you do go out.
• Keep your Blizzard of 2013 photos coming to our Blizzard Gallery.
• And a request from the Wayland Fire Department: Clear a 3-foot berth around the nearest fire hydrant.

[12:55 p.m.] Driving ban lifted for Wayland at 4 p.m.

"Please still stay off the roads unless necessary to allow plows, utility crews & safety officials to clear streets & restore power," Gov. Deval Patrick said via Twitter.

On a separate note: Whole Foods Market is OPEN (with a "skeleton crew of devoted folks," according to the store's Facebook page.)

[12:45 p.m.] Blizzard warning lifted for Wayland. BUT:

"A period of rain is possible Monday," according to a Hazardous Weather Outlook posted by the National Weather Service. "This may result in addtional weight to roofs/snowloading with the already 1-2 feet of snowfall."

[12:35 p.m.] Liberty Pizza is OPEN.

[12:20 p.m.] Updates and reminders:

• Clear snow from around your nearby fire hydrants.
• Clear snow from heating vents AND tailpipes of cars to avoid carbon monixide buildup.
• The driving ban remains in effect, so please stay off the roads.
• No mail delivery in Wayland or throughout New England today.
• Check on your elderly or disabled neighbors as you begin to shovel out.

[10:20 a.m.] Wayland police say that the partial roof collapse report was a false alarm. A tree crew had earlier in the week left a tree leaning on a house, which appeared to be collapsing roof to a passerby.

According to Wayland dispatch, the majority of the calls today have been typical medical calls.

[10 a.m.] According to reports, Wayland Fire is on site of a partial roof collapse on Concord Road. It's unknown at this time whether anyone is trapped inside or injured. We'll update you as soon as we know more.

Wayland Police Sgt. Tom Galvin provided the following update:

Winter storm “Nemo”  continues to drop snow in our area and will do so for the next several hours.  Residents are reminded that: 

1. Governor Patrick’s roadway travel ban is still in effect and all non essential motorists are to remain off the roads.

2. The snow emergency parking ban remains in effect and vehicles parked on the road are subject to tow and the owners expense.

3. Please refrain from walking, cross country skiing, or spending any time in the roadway as plow drivers are continuing to plow and widen roadways, and the height of snow banks and drifts make it difficult to see everyone.   

4. Check heating and dryer vents and clear snow to allow for proper exhaust ventilation.

5. If possible check on elderly or disabled neighbors and assist them with snow removal.

[8:45 a.m.] A new closing for Saturday:

• Moodz Salon and Spa is closed.

[8:25 a.m.] The worst of it has passed. You no doubt woke up this morning to some pretty incredble snow in your yard ... not to mention human-sized snow drifts.

• As for power outages, looks like Wayland made it through. The Nstar power outage map still shows just one outage in town.
• Before you get too excited about getting out, the driving ban REMAINS in effect indefinitely. Please stay off the roads so crews can work.
• Additionally, the MBTA will not be up and going today. Current estimates are saying it could be Monday before the transit system is recovered enought to operate.
• Mail service has been suspended for today

In other words, stay put!

[11:05 p.m.] After a crazy day of snow and wind, Wayland remains an obvious no-show on the Nstar outage map.

It's been very quiet today in Wayland, by all accounts. It appears people heeded the governor's order to stay off the roads. One note, that executive order forbidding vehicle travel does NOT have an end time. Until further notice, that executive order stands.

[6:45 p.m.] Knock on wood, Wayland is showing only one power outage on the Nstar power outage map.

A new closing to report: The Wayland Public Library will be closed on Saturday due to the storm. Check out our full list of closings.

And an OPENING to report: Liberty Pizza will be open until 8 p.m. and plans to be open during normal hours Saturday.

[2:55 p.m.] Whole Foods Wayland is closing up. They hope to reopen at noon Saturday.

[2:46 p.m.] Boston Bruins home game on Saturday has been pushed from a 1 p.m. to a 7 p.m. start.

[1 p.m.] Wayland Police Chief Bob Irving provided the following update:

At 8 a.m. this morning members of the Local Emergency Planning Committee met to discuss the possible implications that the upcoming winter storm will have on the Town of Wayland.  The Department of Public Works has plow crews ready and all aspects of public safety ( police, fire, dispatch) have added staffing for this event. A Swiftreach 911 message was sent to all registered Wayland residents this morning. The LEPC makes the following requests  to the community:

1. There is a winter storm parking ban in effect.  It is imperative that all vehicles be removed from the street so that the snow plows can do their job to keep our streets open.  If vehicles are left on the street, they may be towed at the owner’s expense.

2. There is a possibility of widespread power outages with this storm.  If you lose power, please contact NSTAR at 1-800-592-2000.  During storm events, the public safety dispatching operations become strained and calls to dispatch to report power outages tie up the lines. If you lose power, expect that it will be out for at least the duration of the storm as the utility crews will not be able to work during this storm due to the high winds.

3. Prepare for an outage by making sure that:  you have flashlights,  your cellphone and other mobile data equipment is charged,  you have properly installed and vented generator equipment.

4. Do not go on the roads during the storm unless it is an emergency. [Editor's note: The governor has now banned ALL vehicle traffic, on all roads, effective at 4 p.m. Friday] Travel will be nearly impossible due to blowing snow and visibility will be poor. Pedestrians should also remain off the roads as snowplows will have a difficult time seeing them due to the conditions.

5. Please check in on any elderly or disabled neighbors to be sure they are OK.

The Wayland Emergency Shelter will be opened if it is deemed necessary. The decision to open the shelter will be based on the extent of any power outages and the need to provide a warm place for residents to go. The Wayland Emergency Shelter is located at the Wayland Middle School on Main Street and is staffed by volunteers of the Citizens Emergency Response Team and the Medical Reserve Corps.

[12:50 p.m.] In a press conference from the Framingham Massachusetts Emergency Management (MEMA) bunker, Gov. Deval Patrick announced that all traffic must be off the roads by 4 p.m.

"I have signed an executive order banning vehicle traffic effective at 4 p.m. today," Patrick said. He had already declared a state of emergency as of noon today.

"Please, please exercise caution and use commone sense," Patrick said about getting out after the storm subsides. He said snow drifts as high as 5 feet are expected.

"There are hazards under this winter wonderland," Patrick said.

Additionally, toll collection will STOP at 2 p.m. on the Pike.

[12:05 p.m.] And the snow came down. Just took a drive around Wayland and found the streets largely quiet. A few last minute stops, but it looks like most people were already settled.

"Be back where you need to be for the next 24 hours," is the admonition from Fox25.

[10:24 a.m.] The latest forecast shows Wayland could be in for more than 3 feet of snow before all is said and done Saturday afternoon. Here are the details.

[8:05 a.m.] Gov. Patrick has asked everyone to be off the roads by noon today and DON'T FORGET: The MBTA will suspend service (buses, trains and commuter rail) as of 3:30 p.m.
