Wellesley Coronavirus: Schools, Tolles Parsons Center Closed

Wellesley Free Libraries and the Council on Aging​ have also suspended all programs and activities.

WELLESLEY, MA — Wellesley Public Schools is shutting its doors for two weeks starting Friday, March 13, in response to an ongoing outbreak of the new coronavirus called COVID-19.

In addition to classrooms, the Town of Wesley is also closing the Tolles Parsons Center and suspending all programs from the Council on Aging and Wellesley Free Libraries.

According to a statement from the Town of Wellesley, officials anticipate the school remaining closed for two weeks, but the schools' reopening date is subject to change depending on direction from state and local health officials. Wellesley schools students will be dismissed as usual on Thursday, March 12.

"We realize this decision has a significant impact and far-reaching ramifications for our community and understand the disappointment, frustration and uncertainty that is created. However, we believe these steps are necessary given the current realities," officials said in a statement.

According to the statement, WPS administrators will work closely over the next few days with the Wellesley Teachers Association to finalize a plan for remote learning. In the meantime, WPS will use the district's four remaining "snow days" to prepare for the transition.

Wellesley Health Department issued a reminder to parents: follow protocols for personal protection and prevention to limit the transmission of COVID-19, practice social distancing and do not congregate in areas.

At this time, Wellesley Free Libraries remain open, but all programs and activities have been suspended. The library system also asks parents not to drop their kids off at the libraries for extended periods of time.

"When visiting any Library buildings children should be accompanied by adult caregivers, limit the time of the visit and restrict use of public computers," officials said.

Much like the schools, the Tolles Parsons Center will close for a minimum of two weeks, and all Council on Aging programs and activities — including the lunch program — will be suspended.

COA bus service will run on a restricted basis, and COA staff will remain available to provide critical support services for residents, the town said. Those needing COA assistance can call 781-235-3961.

The recreation department is also set to modify, postpone and/or cancel future programs and large gatherings. For programs that aren't canceled, participants will receive emails instructing them on how to reduce the risk of coronavirus transmission. A list of ongoing programs and cancelations can be found online.
