Westborough Wants 8 New Firefighters: Special Town Election

A special town election is being held this week to vote on whether or not to fund the SAFER grant to increase the department.

WESTBOROUGH, MA—A special town election is being held to vote on grant funding that would allow the Westborough Fire Department to hire a number of firefighters/paramedics to its squad.

The special town meeting is being held on Thursday, Sept. 20, at 7 p.m. at the Town Hall, at which town meeting members vote on the one warrant article.

Submitted by the fire chief, the article looks to approve SAFER grant funding, which would approve $82,782 to the salary account. According to the town manager, the article would provide funding for the first year to hire eight firefighters/paramedics with the federal government paying 75 percent of the total cost for the first two years, 35 percent in year three, and then the town would be responsible for 100 percent thereafter.
