Westborough Will Lose Longtime Transfer Station In 2024
A town committee is exploring alternatives locations for the dump, which was acquired by a Texas company.

WESTBOROUGH, MA — In a little over a year, Westborough will be less a dump.
The longtime E.L. Harvey transfer station along Hopkinton Road will close to the public in June 2024, leaving Westborough without a transfer station. The closure follows Harvey's acquisition by a Texas-based waste company.
In September 2021, Waste Connections bought E.L. Harvey, which has been the largest waste services company in Massachusetts. In January, Waste Connections notified the Westborough Board of Health that it would close the Hopkinton Road transfer station.

For the moment, Westborough will still sell transfer station stickers to residents who want to drop off trash, recycling or compost at the station. The town's Board of Health and Waste Management Exploratory Committee will work on finding alternatives for the closing transfer station ahead of June 2024.
At the same time, the town is attempting to reduce waste output in town. The state Department of Environmental Protection's master plan calls for a 30 percent reduction in solid waste output statewide by 2030, and the health and waste management groups are working on a plan to align with that goal.
