Merrimack Valley Opioid Alert After 20 Overdoses
There were an unprecedented 20 overdoses during a recent two-day span in Lowell, officials said.

LOWELL, MA — An especially dangerous form of heroin and/or fentanyl appears to be circulating in the Greater Lowell area. On Friday and Saturday, there were an unprecedented 20 overdoses in Lowell alone, according to Lowell fire Chief Jeffrey Winward. All of those who overdosed were revived with Narcan, Winward said.
Similar overdoses have been reported in communities surrounding Lowell.
"If you or your loved one is suffering from addiction, please be extra vigilant in the coming days," Winward said in a statement. "Do not use when you are alone, check on loved ones frequently, and call 911 immediately if you witness an overdose."

Last year, an especially lethal form of heroin killed at least seven people on Cape Cod and caused dozens of overdoses.
