Data Breach Included Wilmington Public Schools

Testing data from Wilmington students in Kindergarten, and the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grades were exposed in the nationwide breach.

WILMINGTON, MA — A massive testing data breach that affected 13,000 schools included the testing system used in Wilmington Public Schools for students in Kindergarten, and the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grades. Educational services provider Pearson reported the data breach last week and said it likely affected 13,000 schools in the U.S. The company does not believe any of the exposed data was used maliciously.

In a letter to parents last week, Wilmington Director of Technology and Digital Learning Kenneth Lord said no grade or test data were exposed. Pearson said the data included first and last names and, in some cases, birth dates and email addresses.

Families affected by the data breach were notified by mail by Wilmington Public Schools.
