Hobart, who works for the MBTA, was fueling up his tank at the Cumberland Farms store in Wilmington when the brand hit a major milestone of $1 billion of gas purchased through its SmartPay Check-Link® program earlier this month.
Available as both a payment card and a mobile payment app, SmartPay is free to join and free to use – and users automatically save 10 cents on every gallon of gas, every day.

Hobart estimates that he has fueled up over 100 times over the last two years with the SmartPay mobile app.
“I’m so thankful for Cumberland Farms’ generosity, and I’m a huge fan of the app. You just can’t beat the convenience - you pull up to the pump, type in your pump number, and you’re on your way to filling your tank,” said Hobart in a statement issued Thursday. “I have a car, three motorcycles, and a diesel motorhome, so I stop for gas as often as two to three times a day, depending on the weather and what I’m driving. With this gift from Cumberland Farms I don’t need to worry about the cost of gas, and I’m going to kick it off by filling up my motorhome for a trip I have coming up next week to Alabama!”
To celebrate Hobart’s prize, Cumberland Farms will host a check presentation this Friday, Oct. 16, at the Wilmington store located at 205 Main St. The presentation will take place at 9 a.m. and is open to the public.
“We wanted to celebrate the $1 billion SmartPay milestone, and we are thrilled that the person pumping gas at that moment is such a dedicated and loyal SmartPay user.” said David Heilbronner, senior manager of brand strategy at Cumberland Farms. “We hope he enjoys lots of great motorhome and bike trips on Cumberland Farms over the coming year.”
