Homeowner Shoots Suspicious Man In His Yard: WPD

A man who lives on Second Street saw someone outside dressed all in black with a backpack trying to get into a car.

WORCESTER, MA—A man was treated for gun shot wounds, and also faces a breaking and entering charge, and could face more, after a homeowner caught him in his yard and shot him.

Around 12:47 a.m. on Sunday, April 29, police responded to Second Street where reportedly shots had just been fired. The 56-year-old male homeowner told police he was inside when he saw a man, dressed in all black clothing, wearing a dark colored backpack and on a bike checking the door of a car that was parked on the street.

It looked like he was breaking into the vehicle, said the homeowner to police, and then he spotted the man walk into his yard and to the side of his house.

The homeowner grabbed his gun and went outside to see what the man was up to, finding him in his side yard. He tried to get the man off his property when a fight ensued, and neighbors said the suspicious man threatened to shoot the homeowner and reached for his waistband. The homeowner then fired several rounds at the man. He was hit and ran.

At 1:30 a.m., police were called to Washington Heights for a male who had just been shot. Zackery Bailey, 29, Lovell Street, Worcester, was treated at the scene and transported to the hospital.

While at the hospital, officers discovered that Bailey had an outstanding arrest warrant in effect for Breaking and Entering. Mr. Bailey was placed under arrest for the warrant. The homeowner, who is a licensed gun owner, was interviewed by detectives.

This investigation remains active; Bailey could be facing additional charges as the investigation progresses.
