Worcester Vigil For Harris Wolobah, Teen Who Died After Chip Challenge

The vigil Friday evening will take place near basketball courts on Newton Square as a tribute to the sport Wolobah excelled at.

WORCESTER, MA — A candlelight vigil Friday in Worcester will memorialize Harris Wolobah, the 14-year-old Doherty High School student who died suddenly on Sept. 1.

The vigil will take place near basketball courts on Newton Square. Wolobah was a dedicated basketball player who has been called a "remarkable young athlete" by his coaches and peers.

Friday's vigil will be followed Saturday by a co-ed basketball workout at St. Bernard's Church along Lincoln Street. Proceeds from the $25 per-person workout will go to Wolobah's family.

Last Friday, Wolobah took part in the "One Chip Challenge" promoted by the snack company Paqui. The social media trend dares consumers to resist seeking relief after eating a single extremely spicy tortilla chip. Wolobah was found unresponsive on Friday afternoon after school, and died at a local hospital. An official cause of death had not been released as of Friday, but his family suspects Wolobah may have died due to complications from the challenge.

Friday's candlelight vigil for Wolobah begins at 6:30 p.m. at the corner of Pleasant and Highland streets.
