WORCESTER, MA — The future of a standby Shrewsbury Street taproom and restaurant is under consideration.

The owners of Brew City have kept the bar and grill closed since closing in July for what was supposed to be just a summer break. Now, the owner s are contemplating the future of the establishment, according to a message posted on the restaurant's website this month.

"After closing for summer vacation and planning to reopen in July, we unexpectedly decided to extend our break. As time progressed, and with much consideration, we've remained closed for the time being. Thank you for your continued support, as we contemplate our future together," the message said.

Brew City's building is owned by the company Gateway Development, LLC, whose manager is Jerry Azzarone, the co-owner of the restaurant. The property includes the Brew City building, plus parking lots behind the restaurant along East Central Street. The property has not changed hands recently, according to property records.

Brew City is Worcester's largest beer bar, with over 100 beers on tap, plus a wide menu focused on fare like burgers, pizza and appetizers. The restaurant previously closed in early 2021 for several months due to an increase in local COVID-19 cases.
