5 Things To Know This Week: Battle of the Bands, Groves Mom 2 Mom Sale

Here's what you need to know about Birmingham this week.

  1. Martin Luther King celebrations: Birmingham residents will be out celebrating the life of Martin Luther King, Jr. on Monday. At The Community House, the Race Relations & Diversity Task Force is hosting its while the Roeper Lower School will host a candlelight walk and vigil at 5 p.m. tonight. Meanwhile, dozens of Birmingham students are spending their day off school giving back, volunteering at a variety of area charities.
  2. Our Shepherd Lutheran School open house: Birmingham's Our Shepherd Lutheran School will be hosting an open house at 9 a.m. Tuesday. The school is located at 1658 E. Lincoln and educates students in preschool through 8th grade.
  3. Exhibit opens at Birmingham Historical Museum: Explore Birmingham's musical heritage at the Birmingham Historical Museum and Park's newest exhibit: From What-Not to Red Hot, a look at the city's musical roots featuring vintage, hand-made instruments to local rock-and-rollers. The exhibit opens Wednesday and tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for students and seniors. 
  4. Battle of the Bands Friday: The Youth Action Board (YAB) — a wing of the Birmingham Bloomfield Community Coalition — will be sponsoring its high school Battle of the Bands this Friday night at the Village Players theater on Wodward. Admission is $2 with proceeds going toward the YAB. The event kicks off at 7 p.m.
  5. Groves Mom 2 Mom Sale: Pick up something for your little ones or sell some of those old toys at the annual Groves High School Mom 2 Mom sale, hosted by the Groves Fashion Club. The sale lasts from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday at the high school and table registration is open until Wednesday. For more information, call 248-203-3538.
