Dr. Ananias Diokno, chief medical officer of Beaumont Health System, has announced the appointment of Birmingham's Dr. David Wood Jr., as president of Beaumont Physician Partners effective Jan. 1.
Wood comes to Beaumont from the University of Michigan Health System. A nationally and internationally recognized cancer surgeon, he has been chief of the division of Urologic Oncology since 2002.
In his new role with Beaumont, Wood will develop, implement and monitor Beaumont’s physician-hospital strategic plan for Beaumont Physician Partners, the health system’s medical administrative arm.

Wood will be responsible for managing the Beaumont Physician Practice Plan, including recruitment and retention. He will also promote growth in clinical services across the health system through integrated clinical programs and strong education and research programs.
Before joining the University of Michigan Health System, Wood held a series of increasingly responsible positions with the Detroit Medical Center, Wayne State University and the Karman’s Cancer Institute, including chief medical officer of the Karmanos Cancer Hospital.

An active researcher, he has taken part in 25 grant-funded studies, and served as principal investigator or co-investigator of three clinical trials at the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center. He also has presented at numerous conferences around the world, authored more than 175 articles in peer-reviewed journals and more than 20 book chapters and has co-authored two books.
Wood received his medical degree from the University of Michigan. He served his residency at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation and a three-year fellowship in urologic oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
