Victims React to Crash Into Birmingham Home After Chase

The repairs to two Birmingham homes damaged by a vehicle that left Southfield Road and crashed during a high-speed chase with police are under way. So is the criminal investigation into what happened. 

The driver, a 32-year-old man from Troy was critically injured when his vehicle continued straight even though Brown Street dead ends at Southfield at about 3 a.m. Saturday. Police said the crash concluded a chase that started in Beverly Hills and likely involved drugs and alcohol. His condition was unknown Tuesday, and police officials did not respond to questions from Patch about possible charges.

Residents impacted by the crash have described their accounts of what happened publicly.

"Our police and fire are rock-star good," the owner of the home struck directly in the 500 block of Southfield Road told the Observer and Eccentric newspaper. She declined to give her name to reporters Saturday morning as repairs crews started the clean-up. "They were here right away and they took care of everything. They were amazing."

Sharon Rayman, who's home next door was struck by bricks and flying debris, described the ordeal as frightening to wxyz.com.

"It blew out the supporing structure and broke three windows. We had a house brick in ourdining room and glass everywhere. We were safe, thank goodness, but it was frightening," she said.

The chase started at about 3 a.m. when officers with the Beverly Hills Department of Public Safety tried to stop the 2013 Cadillac ATS after it nearly struck their squad car at 13 Mile and Southfield roads. The vehicle would not stop officers chased it on several residential streets before crossing into Birmingham, reports said. 

Police said the Cadillac nearly struck a Birmingham police vehicle responding to the situation at 14 Mile and Pierce, and then turned westbound onto Brown Street.
