Google Leaving Birmingham For Detroit

An exact date for the move has not been announced.

BIRMINGHAM, MI — Google will be leaving Birmingham for Detroit in the near future. The tech giant will take with it about 100 employees from its 114 Willits Street location in downtown to a site yet to be determined.

"This change represents a great opportunity to add to the diversity of businesses in downtown Birmingham,” Birmingham City Manager Joe Valentine said in a statement. "The space Google is leaving is a great location and we believe some enterprising company will make Birmingham their new home in the future."

"There's so much energy in this city — so much creativity, innovation and hard work — we can't wait to be part of the day to day action and to grow with downtown Detroit," Danielle Russell, head of Google Detroit, said in a statement. "We've been growing in cities all over the country, and there's something special happening in Detroit."

Away from its Mountain View, Calif. Headquarters, Google also has offices recently in Chicago, Miami, Austin and Boulder.
