Kroger Is Collecting Food For Gleaners In January

MICHIGAN -- Over 650,000 men, women and children will face hunger this year in southeast Michigan and that's the driving force behind the food drive happening this month at the local Kroger stores around metro Detroit.

The Kroger Co. of Michigan and Gleaners Community Food Bank invite Kroger customers to help feed hungry friends and neighbors by contributing non-perishable food items during Gleaners’ food collection weekends at 83 Kroger stores in Wayne, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland and Livingston counties this month. The food collection events are part of The Kroger Co.’s Zero Hunger | Zero Waste plan to end hunger in local communities and eliminate waste across the company by 2025.

Gleaners volunteers will greet shoppers inside Kroger store vestibules, distribute lists of needed nutritious foods and personal items, and collect customer donations on Saturdays in January between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. and Sundays between 12 p.m. and 6 p.m. Gleaners asks that customers donate items in boxes, cans or plastic containers to prevent breakage during transport.

Food collection events are scheduled in the following counties on the dates listed:
Saturday, January 5 and Sunday, January 6 – Wayne County
Saturday, January 12 and Sunday, January 13 – Macomb County
Saturday, January 19 and Sunday, January 20 – Oakland County
Saturday, January 26 and Sunday, January 27 – Livingston, Monroe and Wayne counties

“The food and personal items Gleaners collect will make a difference to people in need right here in southeast Michigan,” said Rachel Hurst, corporate affairs manager, The Kroger Co. of Michigan. “Our Kroger customers so willingly give year after year and we feel sure they will enthusiastically support this collection effort to help end hunger in local neighborhoods.”

Gleaners requests items such as the following:

• Canned meats and fish
• Canned fruits
• Meat and hearty soups
• Canned spaghetti, pasta, noodles, macaroni and rice
• Baby foods and formula
• Cereal, oatmeal and granola bars
• Peanut butter and jelly
• Pancake and baking mixes
• Ensure and other nutritional supplement drinks
• Toothpaste and toothbrushes
• Diapers
• Soap and shampoo
• Other personal care items, including disposable razors

Customers may also make a donation at any register or select a pre-filled “From Hearts to Homes” $5 or $10 bag of groceries to add to their total at checkout for donation. Each item, monetary donation and “From Hearts to Homes” grocery bag donated brings hope and food to tables in the community.

"As we approach the heart of winter, many Michigan residents must decide whether to buy food or pay their bills," said Gleaners President & CEO Gerry Brisson. "Too often, families pay their bills first and have little money left to buy food. Gleaners appreciates this opportunity to team with Kroger customers once again to help feed hungry friends and neighbors this winter.”

This marks the 8th year Kroger and Gleaners have held collection events in January to battle hunger.
