Spring Planting: Affordable Trees Available For Dearborn Residents

City expands tree program while keeping costs down. Red Oak, American Elm and Sugar Maple are among trees available.

DEARBORN, MI, — Dearborn property owners now can order affordable trees year round that will be planted on the easement in front of their homes in the spring or fall. Each tree costs $175 plus tax, and the trees range from 4 – 8 feet in height at planting.

This year’s tree selection includes: Crimson King, Sugar Maple, Serviceberry, American Hornbeam, Eastern Redbud, Hackberry, Thornless Locust, Coffeetree, Tulip Tree, Sweetgum, Dawn Redwood, Blackgum, Hophornbeam, London Plane Tree, Flowering Pear, Sawtooth Oak, Swamp White Oak, Shingle Oak, Burr Oak, English Oak, Red Oak, American Elm and Lacebark Elm.

Trees are sold through Dearborn’s Department of Public Works. To reserve a tree, residents can call 943-2317 to talk with an employee or order online.

The area between resident’s sidewalk and curb must be a minimum of four feet wide to accommodate a tree. Public Works officials will decide if there is adequate space in the easement of a property owner’s home for a tree. Multiple trees may be ordered if correct spacing is available. Residents will be billed by the City of Dearborn after tree planting is complete.

The contractor is responsible for planting, mulching, staking, pruning, watering and clean up at the time of planting. At the end of the first year, the contractor will provide a final inspection and remove tree stakes and bracing.

Residents are responsible for maintaining the health of the tree through regular watering.

Residents who had a tree removed from the easement by the City due to construction or any other reason will receive a replacement tree at no charge. To find out if you are part of the tree replacement list, call 943-2317. Residents under these circumstances must pay for the tree only if they request a specific type of tree. The fee is the same $175 paid by other participants in the program.
