14 MI Beaches Closed Or Under Contamination Advisory
Residents can regularly check the Beach Guard website for updates.
MICHIGAN—If you're heading out to beach this weekend to beat the heat, you might want to check the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy’s Beach Guard system to see if the beach you plan on visiting is open.
As of Thursday, 14 Michigan beaches across the state are closed or under contamination advisories for high bacteria levels, according to the Beach Guard website.
The site covers 1233 public beaches and 572 private ones, and is updated regularly as new test results come in.

Here are the 14 closures and advisories:
- Handsom Lake (Crossroads For Youth) - Oakland County. Closed since July 7 for high bacteria levels.
- Wixom Lake (Wixom Waters) - Midland County. Closed since July 15 for high bacteria levels.
- Crooked Lake (Independence Oaks County Park) - Oakland County. Closed since July 27 due to high bacteria levels.
- Big Seven Lake (Seven Lakes State Park) - Oakland County – Closed since August 9 due to high bacteria levels.
- Houghton Lake (Lakeview Park) - Roscommon County – Contamination advisory since August 10 due to high bacteria levels.
- Detroit River (Belle Isle Beach) - Wayne County. Closed since August 18 due to high bacteria levels.
- Independence Lake (Independence Lake County Park) - Washtenaw County. Closed since August 23 due to high bacteria levels.
- Lake St. Clair (St. Clair Shores Memorial Park Beach) - Macomb County. Since August 26 due to high bacteria levels.
- Lake Superior (Chassell Beach) - Houghton County. Contamination advisory since August 24.
- Silver Lake (City Park Beach) - Genessee County. Closed since August 25 due to high bacteria levels.
- Lake Superior (Marquette South Beach) - Marquette County – Closed since August 26 due to high bacteria levels.
- Park Lake (Bath Township Park Lake Beach) - Clinton County – Contamination advisory since August 26 due to high bacteria levels.
- Lake Ovid (Sleepy Hollow State Park Beach) - Clinton County. Contamination advisory since August 26 due to high bacteria levels.
- Lake St. Clair (Lake St. Clair Metropark Beach) - Macomb County. Closed since August 26 due to high bacteria levels.
