DETROIT, MI — Embattled President Joe Biden, facing calls from within the Democratic Party to bow out of the presidential race, is expected in Detroit on Friday, his first visit to Michigan since May.

According to the Associated Press, the president is scheduled to return to the same Detroit high school where he appeared four years ago as he campaigned for president.

The trip will be the president's fourth visit this year to Michigan, which is expected to be a pivotal state in the presidential race. Biden narrowly defeated former President Donald Trump by roughly 154,000 votes in Michigan four years ago.

The visit comes as he tries to shore up a "blue wall" of support despite a "disastrous" performance during a June debate with Trump that called his competence into question.

Now, he faces calls from within his own party — and from celebrities like George Clooney — to exit the race.

Meanwhile, Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer — who will not be at Biden's event in Detroit on Friday — has continued to support his candidacy. Earlier this week, she told late-night host Stephen Colbert that Biden is "up for the job" despite a "crappy debate" against Trump.

Whitmer recently shut down speculation that she could become the Democratic nominee for president if Biden were to bow out, calling it "a distraction."

Biden is expected to arrive at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport at 3:30 p.m. Friday, before speaking at a campaign event in Detroit at 6 p.m. The president is expected to depart from Detroit at 7:10 p.m., headed to Delaware.
