Construction Worker Death: Woman Had Prior Driving Offenses

The 22-year-old woman who reportedly killed a construction worker last week had a suspended license and previous drunk driving charges.

DETROIT, MI — A 22-year-old Detroit woman faces her second set of drunken driving charges for reportedly striking and killing a construction worker on I-75 last week. Samiya Speed, who was reportedly driving without a valid license when the accident occurred, has been charged with operating a motor vehicle causing death, driving with a suspended license causing death, careless driving in a work zone causing death and operating while intoxicated - second offense, according to the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office.

She was allegedly under the influence of alcohol when she struck and killed 57-year-old David Snell, of Bay City around 1:45 a.m. June 14 near downtown Detroit. She also injured a second construction worker, police said.

Authorities said the northbound lanes of I-75 were shut down at I-94 in downtown Detroit overnight June 14, diverting traffic to Warren Avenue when the crash happened in the right lane. The red SUV driven by Speed reportedly rolled multiple times in the construction zone and stopped on top of Snell.
