Coronavirus Cases Now Over 20,000 In Michigan

The state has also reported 959 deaths attributed to the new coronavirus.

MICHIGAN — Michigan has surpassed 20,000 confirmed cases of the new coronavirus and is approaching 1,000 coronavirus-related deaths, according to the most recent information provided by the state.

There were 1,376 new cases reported as of 10 a.m. Wednesday and an additional 114 reported deaths. The new numbers bring the state's total to 20,346 reported cases of the coronavirus and 959 total deaths resulting from the virus.

Detroit has the most coronavirus cases in Michigan, with 5,824 cases reported. The city has also reported 251 deaths.

In Oakland County, there were 4,007 cases of the coronavirus reported, as well as 234 deaths. Patch has begun publishing the number of coronavirus cases reported in Oakland County by zip code, using the most up to date information available by the county's health department.

Wayne County continues to have the bulk of the state's coronavirus cases, reporting 3,802 as of Wednesday morning. There also were 195 reported deaths in Wayne County. You can see how many cases of the coronavirus have been reported in a particular Wayne County community by going here.

Michigan remains No. 3 in the nation in total reported cases. New York, with more than 149,000, and New Jersey, with 47,000 cases, rank ahead. California is right behind Michigan with more than 17,000 cases reported.

Earlier Wednesday, the state took measures to help alleviate issues at the unemployment office, which has been overwhelmed with people filing for unemployment benefits due to issues stemming from the coronavirus.

The state said the Michigan Unemployment Insurance Agency will be extending call center hours by an hour Monday-Friday and and has quadrupled staffing levels over the last several weeks. It is expected there will be around 500 employees by the end of the week, and hundreds more staff will be added to the call center in the coming weeks.

Further measures have been taken to treat coronavirus patients with General Motors agreeing to create more than 30,000 ventilators as part of a $490 million contract.

The agreement is the first contract for ventilator production under the Defense Production Act, which was invoked by President Donald Trump last month. The ventilators are to be delivered to the Strategic National Stockpile by the end of August, with a production schedule allowing for the delivery of more than 6,100 ventilators by June 1.

The U.S. continues to lead the world in the number of coronavirus cases, tallying more than 418,000 as of Wednesday. The U.S. has reported more than 14,000 deaths due to the virus. There have been more than 1.4 million cases reported around the world. Spain (146,690) and Italy (139,422) are the two nations closest to the U.S. in total cases.
