The man did not return fire, Fitzgerald said.

Fitzgerald said the wounded suspect is in his mid-20s. He was taken to a nearby hospital and in listed in critical condition.

At some point during the chase, Fitzgerald said the man tried to throw his weapon onto the roof of a nearby building. He said Detroit firefighters and police later located the weapon there.

"I wish he would have just dropped the gun and kept running," Fitzgerald said. "Unfortunately, he picked that gun up and turned toward officers. It's not the best thing to do, unfortunately."
