Detroit Police Chief Back On Duty After Bout With Coronavirus

Detroit Police Chief James Craig returned to duty Thursday after recovering from the coronavirus.

DETROIT, MI — Detroit Police Chief James Craig is back to work after recovering from his battle with the coronavirus.

The chief made the announcement Thursday in a news conference along with city mayor Mike Duggan and spoke to the level of uncertainty that sounds the virus.

"None of us, I don't care who you are, none of us have had to deal with anything like this," Craig said. "You've heard me say, you know, some of the crisis I've dealt with over, almost 44 years. Earthquakes, civil unrest, mass shootings, but let me just say, there is no textbook on this."

It was announced that Craig had tested positive for the coronavirus March. Fox 2 in Detroit reported at the time that Craig would not be attending meeting until her recovered, but added that he had only mild symptoms at the time.

At the time of Craig's diagnosis, the department had said it had at least 39 officers who tested positive and 468 have been quarantined, Fox 2 reported. Craig said Thursday that 338 members of the department in quarantine, including 257 sworn officers.

Craig noted police officers and staff are taking additional measures to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

"They're wearing masks in the field, they clean the vehicles, those things are making a difference and undoubtedly it's saving lives," he said.
