How The DIA Enriches The Lives Of Local Senior Citizens
Thursdays are an especially important day the museum. Here's a look into this special programming.

DETROIT, MI — The Detroit Institute of Arts is making a special impact on the community's senior population. Last year, nearly 7,000 metro Detroiters participated in exclusive programs for adults 55 and over at the Detroit Institute of Arts where they engaged with the community through art.
“The DIA provides vital programs for seniors from across Southeast Michigan that give them an opportunity to enjoy one-of-a-kind art, history and culture,” said Nicole Urban, program manager for the Macomb Community Action Office of Senior Services. “Sometimes people become isolated as they age and these activities help keep them connected to people and the community.”
Thursdays at the Museum is one of the DIA’s most popular programs, offering a wide range of art-related activities including tours, art talks, screenings of classic films and art-making. Many senior groups visit the museum specifically to participate in the program.

“Our members thoroughly enjoyed their guided tour and the opportunity to relax and enjoy art with others,” said Polly McIlrath from the Cane and Able Stroke Recovery Group. “Thursdays at the Museum is perfectly tailored for seniors to experience the DIA’s collection with their peers.”
Some groups make museum visits a regular event for their organization.

“Residents look forward to their visits to the DIA,” said Jan Crawford, a travel programmer at Romeo-Washington-Bruce Parks and Recreation Senior Centers. “There’s always something new for them to enjoy. Whether it’s a gallery tour or an art-making activity, residents leave with a new perspective on art, history and culture and huge smiles on their faces.”
Seniors are welcome to attend Thursdays at the Museum, as an individual or as part of a group. The museum also offers daily tours, workshops and special events built for all ages that provide the same unique artistic experience. There are free guided tours every day and new exhibits and pieces are frequently added to the collection. Free bus transportation is available for groups of 25 or more.
“The DIA is a place where everyone can connect with others and view unique art they can’t experience through books, TV or the internet,” said Salvador Salort-Pons, DIA director. “We are proud to offer programs for older adults throughout Southeast Michigan to help them build experiences and relationships through art.”
Last year more than 200 senior groups scheduled visits to the museum. Seniors from Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties have free access to the DIA through the tri-county millage passed in 2012.
