How To Do Yoga At The Detroit Zoo This Summer

Local yogis can bring their cats, camels, cows and downward dogs to the Detroit Zoo starting in July.

ROYAL OAK, MI — Local yogis can bring their cows, cats, camels and downward dogs to the Detroit Zoo this summer. Beginning July 10, guests 13 years and older will have a new opportunity to participate in an early morning meditative flow with a certified yoga instructor at the zoo.

Sessions will be held 8-9 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays, through August 30.

“Practicing yoga outdoors surrounded by nature and wildlife – before the Zoo even opens to the public – will be an incredible way to begin the day,” said Gerry Van Acker, chief operating officer for the Detroit Zoological Society (DZS). “Spending time at the Zoo is beneficial for both mental and physical health; it’s only natural that we offer an opportunity like this for our guests.”

Yoga will take place in the Detroit Zoo’s Nature Grove, located near the National Amphibian Conservation Center. The cost for one session is $15 for DZS members and $30 for non-members. Packages are available in increments of five, 10 and 16 classes; the more sessions purchased, the greater the value. Sessions are available for purchase online.

The cost includes Detroit Zoo admission and parking on the day of the yoga session. Guests will need to bring their own yoga mat and water bottle. Complimentary infused water will be provided. Yoga participants can enter the Zoo starting at 7:45 a.m.
