DETROIT — A man was hit and killed on a Detroit freeway Tuesday afternoon while running from officers, according to Michigan State Police.

The incident happened at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday along the southbound lanes of Michigan 39 (Southfield Freeway) near Joy Road, according to police.

Troopers said officers were responding to an unrelated incident in the area and were flagged down by someone who told them there was a "suspicious male in the area topside," according to police.

When officers turned the patrol car turned around to approach the man, he jumped over the freeway fence onto the west side of the southbound side, according to police.

The man was then hit by a semi-truck in the center lane, then hit by a Ford Edge, according to police.

The 44-year-old Detroit man was taken to a nearby hospital where he died, according to police.

Troopers did not release his name.

Officials were still investigating the incident and said an autopsy will be performed.
