-5 Wind Chill, Lake Effect Snow Timeline Across Metro Detroit Wednesday

Forecasters warned heavy snow squalls are possible across the metro Detroit area Wednesday afternoon.

SOUTHEAST MICHIGAN — Colder air with lake effect snow will move into Southeastern Michigan on Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.

Snow flurries will begin falling across southeastern Michigan on Wednesday morning with highs in the 30s, before heavier bands of snow move into the region, according to the weather service.

The snow will intensify between 3 and 11 p.m. when snow squalls are possible with rapid accumulation and loss of visibility, according to the weather service.

Snow squalls are quick bursts of snow that can quickly led to whiteout conditions. The most likely place for these snow squalls is in the heart of the metro Detroit area, between Interstate 69 and Interstate 94, according to the weather service.

As temperatures fall across southeastern Michigan on Wednesday night, winds will pick up, gusting to 35-40 miles per hour at times and pushing wind chills to near zero degrees, according to the weather service.

Forecasters expect the heavy snow bands to wrap up by 11 p.m. Wednesday night, but warned light snow with more snow squalls will be possible between 11 p.m. and 8 a.m. Thursday morning.

By that time, temperatures can reach -5 degrees with wind chills across southeastern Michigan, according to the weather service.

Forecasters warned roads may be slippery Thursday morning because salt might not be as effective due to the frigid temperatures.

Total snow accumulations by Thursday morning will be 1-3 inches across the heart of the metro Detroit area, with some localized communities seeing 3-4 inches of fresh snow, according to the weather service.

Highs will struggle to reach 20 degrees across southeastern Michigan on Thursday and wind chills will keep temperatures in the single digits for most of the day, according to the weather service.

Temperatures across southeastern Michigan will slightly rebound Friday before warming back into the 40s with rain chances over the weekend, according to the weather service.
