MI Senate Majority Leader Shirkey Had COVID In December: Report

Michigan Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey tested positive for the disease caused by the coronavirus on Dec. 23, according to a report.

LANSING, MI — Michigan Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey (R-Clarkdale) tested positive for the coronavirus on Dec. 23, according to multiple reports Wednesday.

Shirkey, who has been critical of many safety measures put in place in Michigan due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, believes he was exposed to the virus on Dec. 19, and was in the State Capitol on Dec. 21.

At least 14 Michigan lawmakers have tested positive for the coronavirus, while at least 37 legislative staffers have reported they tested positive for COVID-19, according to the Detroit Free Press.

A statement from Shirkey's staff said he wore a mask during his visit.
