Michigan Adds 3,011 Coronavirus Cases, 35 Deaths Monday

MICHIGAN — More than 3,000 new cases of the coronavirus have been reported in Michigan since Saturday, state health officials said Monday.

The state reported 3,011 new COVID-19 cases and 35 more deaths attributed to the virus Monday. The new figures bring Michigan's statewide coronavirus totals to 551,080 confirmed cases and 14,326 COVID-19 deaths.

On Saturday, Michigan added 1,601 new cases of the coronavirus and 221 more COVID-19 deaths.
More than 463,000 people in Michigan have recovered from the coronavirus, according to state health officials.

Monday's new coronavirus figures come as the state reported that 17 cases of a new, faster-spreading variant also have been confirmed in the state.

In a news conference Monday, Joneigh Khaldun, the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services chief medical executive, said Monday 13 B.1.1.7 cases have been confirmed in Washtenaw County and at least four have been confirmed in Wayne County.

"This variant is more easily spread from person to person, and that means that for any given case it will likely infect more people and lead to more spread," Khaldun said. "This means probably more cases overall, more hospitalizations and deaths."

Several of the cases have been linked to the University of Michigan, prompting the university to pause its athletic programs for two weeks.
