Michigan Coronavirus Death Toll Nears 2,000
Michigan is approaching 2,000 deaths related to the coronavirus as its total case numbers climb past 28,000.
MICHIGAN —Michigan reported 1,058 new cases of the coronavirus Wednesday, bringing the statewide total to more than 28,000 while the death toll continues to climb toward 2,000.
The numbers, indicative of what has been reported as of 10 a.m. Wednesday, show that there are 28,059 cases of the coronavirus in Michigan, as well as 1,921 deaths attributed to the virus. The state on Wednesday reported an additional 153 deaths.
Detroit has reported the majority of Michigan's cases, with more than 7,100 total coronavirus cases reported Wednesday. The city has also reported 475 people have died from the virus.

As of Wednesday morning, Wayne County had 5,408 cases and 409 deaths. A breakdown of where those cases have been reported in Wayne County, based on community, can be found here. However, it is worth noting that county and state numbers do not add up based on a variety of variables, including private testing numbers.

On Tuesday, Wayne County took measures to ensure there was additional hospital bed space for patients suffering from the coronavirus. Officials voted to spend $500,000 in Community Development Block Grant funds to transform the former Vibra Hospital in Lincoln Park into a working, overflow facility for coronavirus patients.
The hospital is expected to open with an 80-bed capacity as soon as Friday, but has the potential to grow into a 440-bed facility as needed.
In Oakland County, where the state high among Michigan counties was reported, there were 5,576 cases of the coronavirus reported along with 392 deaths.

Macomb County reported nearly 4,000 cases as of Wednesday, with 3,792. The county also reported 330 deaths.
