Michigan Coronavirus Deaths Exceed 3,000 In Latest Numbers
On the same day that Governor Gretchen Whitmer extended her previously issued stay-home order, Michigan exceeded 3,000 coronavirus deaths.
MICHIGAN — The state reported 1,350 additional cases of the new coronavirus on Friday, the same day Governor Gretchen Whitmer extended a stay-home order put in place to help prevent the spread of the virus. Meanwhile, the state death total eclipsed 3,000.
With Friday's update, Michigan has reported a total of 36,641 coronavirus cases. The state also on Friday reported 108 additional deaths that officials are attributing to the coronavirus. The statewide death total in Michigan is now 3,085.
The daily update comes the same day that Whitmer announced she was extending her previously issued stay-home order. An explainer of what is included in that order can be found here.

In her announcement, Whitmer said progress has been made due to social distancing and staying home.

"As we've seen our numbers begin to plateau over the course of the last week, we know that it's because Michiganders are doing their part and staying home and staying safe," Whitmer said. "I want to reiterate how important it is that we continue to do that. It's doing the right thing and is paying off."
However, Friday marks the second straight day the state has reported more than 1,000 new cases after seeing a short lull in new reports. Friday's update is the highest number of new cases the state has reported this week.
Below is a breakdown of confirmed cases of the coronavirus by county:

State numbers are released daily at 3 p.m. but are indicative of what has been reported by 10 a.m. that day.
Numbers are sometimes altered as public health officials investigate individual cases. Case numbers sometimes do not match numbers provided by respective counties due to several variables, including testing done by private organizations that report to either the state or the county but not both.
Deaths are reported by health care providers and recorded by local health departments. Other data, such the number of individuals who have recovered at the state level, are released on Saturdays.
Where The Most Cases Have Been Reported
The city of Detroit, which reports separately from Wayne County, leads the state in confirmed cases of the coronavirus. It also leads the state in reported deaths. The city reported 8,473 cases and 830 deaths, according to state data.
Wayne County has 6,934 confirmed coronavirus cases, according to the state data. There are 613 coronavirus-related deaths in Wayne County, the data shows.
State data reported that Oakland County has 6,804 cases of the virus, and 585 deaths.
Macomb County has 5,022 cases of the coronavirus and 504 deaths, according to the state data.
Who Is Infected?
State-provided data breaks down the more than 36,000 confirmed coronavirus cases in several ways.
According to the data, the average age of those who have died from the virus is 74.2. The youngest person to have died from coronavirus in Michigan was 5 years old. The oldest was 107. The majority of people who have tested positive for coronavirus (19 percent) were between the ages of 50-59. However, 39 percent of coronavirus deaths were people 80 years old or older.
Of those who have tested positive for the virus, 8 percent have died, according to state-provided data.
The majority (54 percent) of people who have tested positive for coronavirus are female. However, 55 percent of those who have died were reported as male.
