Numbers are sometimes altered as public health officials investigate individual cases. Case numbers sometimes do not match numbers provided by respective counties due to several variables, including testing done by private organizations that report to either the state or the county but not both.
Deaths are reported by health care providers and recorded by local health departments. Other data, such the number of individuals who have recovered at the state level, are released on Saturdays.
Detroit Remains Hardest Hit Michigan City
Detroit reported 7,736 total cases of the coronavirus and 641 deaths. The city remains as the hardest hit community in the state, with more cases and deaths than any other.
As part of a continuous effort to combat the increase in coronavirus cases, the city announced on Monday that it will begin testing employees at essential businesses. Mayor Mike Duggan said he hopes Detroit will become the first U.S. city to have testing in place for all essential employees.
On top of the overwhelming number of cases in Detroit, the city has taken a toll by the number of deaths reported. On Sunday, a 5-year-old girl from Detroit became the youngest person in Michigan to die from the coronavirus. Prior to the girl's death, the youngest person to have reportedly died from the virus in Michigan was 20-years-old.
But the city has seen promise in its overall numbers. The city has reported 47 deaths over the past three days, a number that is lower than what the city has seen throughout the pandemic, Duggan said Monday.
However, Duggan urged, residents must remain cautious regarding the virus.
"The progress is great, but we're in a dangerous time," Duggan said Monday. "If you look at the pattern in other countries, we have dramatically bent the curve.
"But every place in the world, when people started to pat themselves on the back and said, 'This is under control, we can relax,' they've seen a significant spike. And we just can't afford that in the city."
