Michigan Reports Its Single Largest Rise in Coronavirus Deaths

With more than 200 newly reported deaths Friday, the state saw its highest single-day increase in coronavirus deaths to date.

MICHIGAN — Michigan saw its largest single day increase in deaths related to the new coronavirus on Friday, adding more than 200 deaths to the statewide total.

Michigan now has 1,281 deaths from the new coronavirus, which includes the 205 deaths added on Friday. The state also reported 1,279 new cases as of 10 a.m. Friday, bringing the statewide total to 22,783.

Detroit, which reports separately from Wayne County, has reported having 6,218 cases of the coronavirus. It also has reported 327 deaths attributed to the virus. The city has more reported cases and deaths than any other community in the state.

Wayne County has reported 4,321 cases, the second most of any county in the state. It has reported 282 deaths, tied for the highest among Michigan counties. You can see how many coronavirus cases the Wayne State Health Department has reported in each of its communities by going here.

Michigan ranks third in the U.S. for total coronavirus cases. The most recent data indicates New York has reported more than 161,800 cases; New Jersey has reported over 51,000 cases. In order to limit the spread of the virus, Whitmer on Thursday extended and expanded a stay-at-home order for residents.

The U.S. has reportedly been home to more than 425,000 cases, with more than 14,600 deaths attributed to the coronavirus, according to the World Health Organization.

Across the globe, more than 1.6 million people have been reported to have the coronavirus, according to the most recent data provided by the WHO. The group also reports that more than 98,400 had died from the virus. However, more than 333,000 people have recovered from the coronavirus as well, according to the WHO.
