Michigan State Police Hosts Successful ‘Troopers on Tour’ Community Safety Event, with USG as Key Partner
Second annual Detroit stop held at The Wayne State University Fieldhouse with hundreds of families in attendance
The Michigan State Police (MSP) and Detroit Police Department (DPD) recently hosted more than 800 people for its second annual Detroit Basketball Cop, Troopers on Tour event at The Wayne State University Fieldhouse.
This three-hour, family-friendly event was a huge success, underscoring the growing impact of MSP’s statewide initiative to strengthen community connections and foster lasting relationships. In 2025, MSP expanded the Troopers on Tour series to 11 cities across Michigan.
The event brought together law enforcement agencies with a clear goal: to build trust and positive relationships, particularly with young people. Attendees had the chance to interact with MSP troopers, DPD officers, and first responders from several agencies, including the U.S. Coast Guard, in a fun, informal setting.

From basketball games with officers to crime-prevention demos, visitors explored hands-on exhibits featuring police vehicles, fire department gear, U.S. Coast Guard equipment, and even Department of Public Works machinery. Families also enjoyed free food, carnival-style games, and kid-friendly activities throughout the day.
USG was proud to support the event, supplying funding for essentials like water, hot dogs, and chips to keep families fueled while they connected with first responders. This was the second Troopers on Tour event that USG has supported. Earlier this summer, at the Dearborn event, USG provided an inflatable bounce house for children to enjoy.

“The Michigan State Police appreciate the support of USG in making our Troopers on Tour Basketball Cop events possible,” stated Sgt. Don Stewart. “These events help to build trust with the communities we serve by making personal connections with residents through activities that build safer, more connected communities for everyone.”
For USG, a company where safety is central to everything it does, supporting Troopers on Tour was a natural fit. The building materials that USG makes are used in hospitals, offices, airports, universities, and homes throughout Michigan and across the country. With three facilities in Michigan (River Rouge, Otsego, and Alabaster), USG integrates safety into every aspect of its operations, from product development to workplace culture and extends that same commitment to the well-being of the communities where its employees live and work.
As the MSP Troopers on Tour program continues to grow, it showcases what’s possible when businesses, public agencies, and residents come together with a shared goal: building safer, stronger, and more connected communities for everyone.
