Teen Shot, Hurt As Officer Is Run Over By Fleeing Car In Detroit: Cops

The incident happened as officers approached a running car that was backed into a driveway and was blocking the sidewalk, police said.

DETROIT — A police officer was injured and a teenager was critically injured in a Tuesday night incident on Detroit's west side, Assistant Police Chief Charles Fitzgerald told reporters.

Officers were on patrol in the area of Seven Mile and Greenfield when they approached a car that was backed into a driveway and was blocking the sidewalk, Fitzgerald said.

As officers approached the car, they noticed two people who appeared to be stuffing something under the seat, Fitzgerald said.

When officers asked them to get out of the car, they refused and the driver backed up, struck a scout car several times, and then struck and dragged an officer while speeding away, Fitzgerald said.

That's when officers, citing fears for their own safety, fired multiple shots, striking the 18-year-old passenger four times in the arm and chest, Fitzgerald said.

The 18-year-old was taken to a nearby hospital and listed in critical condition, while the officer who was dragged was treated and is expected to be ok, Fitzgerald said.

Officers found the teen suffering from the gunshot wounds a few blocks away where they also found the car, but the driver, whom police believe was a 17-year-old, had run away, Fitzgerald said.

Police believe the teens are members of a gang in the area.

Police were still investigating the incident and looking for the 17-year-old.
