Toyota Recalls 228,000 Tacoma Pickup Trucks

The safety recall was announced Thursday.

Toyota is recalling certain models of the Tacoma pickup truck because some vehicles could lose control and crash, the company said in a news release announcing the safety recall.

About 228,000 Tacoma vehicles from the model years 2016 and 2017 are affected by the recall.

According to Toyota, the involved vehicles have rear differentials that may leak oil, and if a vehicle is continuously operated in that condition, the rear differential could become damaged and result in noise and reduced propulsion. In some cases, the company says the differential could seize and result in a loss of control of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Consumers can check if their vehicle is impacted by the recall on the Toyota website.

"Toyota dealers will check the rear differential for any oil leakage. If no leaks are found, all fasteners will be re-tightened. If leakage is found, the rear differential carrier gasket will be replaced with a new one, and new fasteners will be installed," Toyota said in a statement. "If rear differential components are damaged, the rear differential carrier assembly will be replaced with a new one. This remedy will be at no cost to customers. All known owners of the involved vehicles will receive a notification by first class mail starting in the middle of June."
