Local Author Uses Personal Experience to Write Book About Fighting Cancer

John Ricco, founder of John Ricco Books, started his Farmington Hills-based business in 2008 after a 12-year battle with cancer.

"It (the book) is sparked from my experience as a 12 year multiple myeloma (rare blood cancer) experience and talking to many survivors along the way," Ricco said. "It is meant to be a hand's on, practical set of tools for the survivor."

How did your business come to be?: My book, "The Ride of Your Life:  Fighting Cance with Attitude", was published in March 2008. It is a "toolkit" to attain a positive attitude in fighting cancer and moving your life forward.  It is sparked from my experience as a 12 year multiple myeloma (rare blood cancer) experience and talking to many survivors along the way. It is meant to be a hand's on, practical set of tools for the survivor.

What kind of services do you offer?: My book is the basis of my business. I spread the word and market the book mainly by talking to various groups:  churches, cancer support, senior groups, community organizations, community continuing education groups etc.

What's a fact about your business that most customers probably don't know?: The book's theme can also be applied to just about any life adversity or challenge, beyond cancer.

What do you want your business to be best known for?: Helping others to cope with cancer, and live and thrive as a survivor.

What's your most popular product or service?: My book and speaking about the theme of the book: positive attitude. I like keeping it practical and a good dose of humor helps.

When was the business founded?: My business was founded in March 2008.

Why did you choose to locate to Farmington-Farmington Hills?: My wife, Jan, and I have been residents of Farmington Hills since 1980.
