ROUGE to Expand Into Former Woodward Avenue Candy Shop Space in Ferndale

The makeup and nail studio's success is a local example of the burgeoning organic personal care products industry.

ROUGE MakeUp & Nail Studio in Ferndale soon will expand thanks to booming demand for its natural nail services and organic and vegan beauty products.

The 650-square-foot studio with a retro vibe will maintain its current space at 23341 Woodward Ave. and take over the spot next door formerly occupied by the Woodward Avenue Candy Shop, adding approximately 1,500 square feet.

“Due to the overwhelming loyalty of our Ferndale clientele, it’s time to expand,” said makeup artist Cheryl Salinas-Tucker, who co-owns ROUGE with her sister Jeny Bulatovic, a manicurist. “Ferndale folks can expect more glam, more green, more ROUGE.”

Woodward Avenue Candy Shop owner Janie DeJaeghere, who earlier this month vacated the space at 23337 Woodward Ave., will continue to take orders for sweets and baked goods and keep customers updated via the Woodward Avenue Candy Shop page on Facebook, she said.

"We were given an opportunity to get out of our lease early and (ROUGE) is going to use every area of the store (including the back and basement),” DeJaeghere said.

ROUGE’s success is a local example of the burgeoning organic personal care products industry. London-based marketing and information services firm Organic Monitor has forecast that North American revenues from organic personal care products could hit $8 billion by 2017, driven by widening distribution, new product launches and consumers’ health concerns.

ROUGE, which opened in the summer of 2010, addresses such concerns by using the Michigan-made Eve Organics Makeup & Skincare line and California-made organic and vegan SpaRitual nail polishes; it does not do acryllc nails, which means the studio does not have the chemical smell that is common in many salons.

The ROUGE expansion will be completed later this summer and allow for new spa services and more room for the makeup studio and events, Salinas-Tucker said.

“When we do open, there will be a big party because we’re good at that,” she said with a smile.
