Nearly 100 volunteers shrugged off the chilly weather Saturday morning to participate in Clean the Ferndale Up.
The Ferndale Community Foundation put on the annual event that brings volunteers together to clean, repair and spruce up public spaces throughout the city. Foundation board member Matthew Nowaczok helped to launch the event in 2012.
"Matt is a great example of what Ferndale's about," Mayor Dave Coulter said to volunteers, who assembled Saturday outside City Hall before dispersing to sites throughout the city to plant flowers, pick up trash and generally make the city look nice for spring.

Coulter said people in a lot of communities rely on the mayor and City Council to solve problems; but, in Ferndale, they take action.
