Macomb County Collects 470,000 Pounds of Food for Stamp Out Hunger

On May 12, letter carriers in Macomb County conducted the National Association of Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive, collecting more than 470,000 pounds of food locally.

Of the total amount collected in Macomb County, the Macomb Food Program received more than 300,000 pounds. The canned beef stew, boxes of cereal, chicken noodle soup and hundreds of other food items will help feed Macomb County families, senior citizens on fixed incomes, disabled veterans, the unemployed and homeless individuals.

The Macomb Food Program is grateful to the National Association of Letter Carriers and the United States Postal Service who helped make this food drive a success. Teamsters Local 299 and the USF Holland and YRC trucking companies provided eight semi-trucks, the fuel and the drivers to transport the donated food from the post offices to the food warehouse.

“The generosity of local residents will help thousands of hungry people right here in Macomb County,” said Macomb County Executive Mark Hackel, in a prepared statement.

The Macomb Food Program is a division of Macomb County Community Services Agency (MCCSA). The mission of the Macomb Food Program is to feed hungry people in Macomb County. MCCSA is a Community Action Agency providing a network of services to diminish the causes and effects of poverty.

The National Association of Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive is a nation-wide effort. This year, more than 70 million pounds of non-perishable food were collected to help restock the shelves of food banks, soup kitchens and pantries throughout America. The donated food helps provide emergency food boxes and meals to people struggling with hunger.
