Novi House Broken Into, Spray Painted with Racial Slurs

The following information was provided by the Novi Police Department.

A woman reported that her house on Scarborough Lane was broken into and the interior was spray painted with Asian racial slurs at the end of November, according to a Novi police report.

The woman did not report the crime until 10 days later when she was prompted to do so by her insurance provider, the report said, so she is not sure the exact day the incident occurred. She told police she did not know she should report it.

The woman currently lives in Indiana, but is in the process of moving back to Novi. Her elderly mother was staying at the house, which is located near Meadowbrook Road and Grand River Avenue, when the incident happened.

The woman said her mother called her that day in the evening to say the front door was open and damaged and that there was some type of marks all over the house, the report said. The woman said her mother cannot see well, so she immediately drove back to Novi because her description did not make any sense, the report said.

When the woman arrived, she said the front door appeared to have been kicked in, the report said. She found racial slurs spray painted in the kitchen, master bedroom and master bedroom, the report said.

The homeowner also said that a mattress in first floor bedroom appeared to have been stabbed numerous times with a knife and she found foam all over the area, the report said. The knife was left stuck in the mattress, and the woman recognized it as one from her kitchen.

The woman went through the house but could not find anything missing, the report said.

Novi police were unable to find any fingerprints, the report said.
