Townhouse proposal in Novi sparks debate and concerns over impact of wetlands (wxyz.com) — A major 161-unit townhouse proposal off Providence Parkway in Novi could alter nearby wetlands and woodlands, and residents are organizing to speak at a planning commission public hearing next week. Neighbors worry about tree loss, density, and environmental impact, while city planners stress a thorough review and note the developer is proposing extra wetland mitigation beyond city requirements.
   

2. Eastbound 14 Mile Road to close in phases for water infrastructure work (clickondetroit.com) — Eastbound 14 Mile Road will shut down in two phases near Novi starting Monday, Jan. 12, affecting drivers between East Walled Lake Drive, Novi/Decker Road, and M-5 through late April. Expect detours, delays, and ongoing construction as a major new water main is installed and the road fully restored by June 2026.
   

3. Detroit-area man pleads guilty to committing $500K in unemployment insurance fraud (mlive.com) — A Novi resident has pleaded guilty in federal court to orchestrating more than $500,000 in unemployment insurance fraud using stolen identities across multiple states. Prosecutors say he filed about 90 bogus claims between 2020 and 2022 and now faces a potential prison sentence of up to 22 years, with sentencing scheduled for May 7.
   

4. Catholic League wrestling notebook: Detroit Catholic Central wins 61st annual home invite (mlive.com) — Novi Detroit Catholic Central’s wrestling team opened 2026 by narrowly winning its 61st annual home invitational, edging Brighton by a single point in a deep statewide field. Five Shamrocks, including standout junior Mack Moscovic, captured individual titles, while several other Catholic League programs also notched strong tournament and quad performances to start the new year.
   

5. Macy's Confirms Grandville Store Closure in Michigan (wkfr.com) — Novi’s Macy’s is staying open, even as the company shutters its Grandville store and continues a broader wave of closures across Michigan. Only nine Macy’s locations will remain statewide, so Novi residents may see more regional shoppers relying on their store as nearby options disappear.
