Driver Loses Consciousness, Crashes Into Neighborhood Playground

A possible seizure caused the accident early Friday morning at The Crossings subdivision.

A neighborhood playground is under repair after a black Cadillac DTS struck a street sign, crashed through the white fence, ran over a bench and trash can and came to a stop against the plastic slide of the playscape early Friday morning, according to a traffic crash report from the .

The incident occurred just after 5:30 a.m. Friday in The Crossings subdivision near Normandy Drive and Bold Meadows. According to the report, the driver, who is a resident of the subdivision, appeared to have a medical situation "or possible seizure that may have caused the accident."

"He blacked out," said Tim Brewer, project crew foreman for Timberland Landscape, which maintains the grounds. "He just knocked the fence out and bent one of the park benches that he knocked off."

Brewer said it was very lucky the incident occurred early in the morning, when there were no children present on the playground.

The driver, who is also a U.S. government employee, was driving a government-owned vehicle when he lost control. The responded and cut the driver out of the vehicle.

According to the report, the driver "did not smell of any intoxicants, ... had vomited in (the) front seat" and "was very unaware of his surroundings as he appeared to come out of (the) episode/possible seizure." Oakland Township Fire Department transported the driver to Crittenton Hospital.
