Man, 81, Commits Suicide at Orion Township Sheriff's Office Substation

The Orion Township man shot himself in the station's bathroom Monday afternoon.

An 81-year-old Orion Township man shot himself in the head at the Oakland County Sheriff's Orion Township substation Monday afternoon, according to an Sheriff's Office report.

The man was pronounced dead at Pontiac Osteopathic Hospital (POH) Monday evening, the report stated.

The man reportedly drove to the substation in his pickup, walked in and requested to use the substation's bathroom. "He was escorted there and shortly after entering the bathroom he shot himself with a handgun," the sheriff's office report said.

The Orion Fire Department transported the man to POH, where he was later pronounced dead.

"We're sorry for the gentleman and his family," Orion Township Substation Commander Lt. Bruce Naile said, "and we're sorry that at his age it came to the point that he felt he had to take his own life."

According to the sheriff's office, the victim's wife passed away a few years ago, and family members said he lived alone and was concerned about his health due to a recent heart surgery. 

"He was probably trying to make a difficult situation less difficult on his family by not doing it at home or in his car," Naile said.
