UPDATE: Winter Storm Warning in Effect; 'Significant Icing' and Snow on the Way

UPDATE 12:45 p.m. Tuesday: The winter storm watch has been upgraded to a winter storm warning beginning at 8 tonight and ending at 8 p.m. Wednesday. "Large amounts" of freezing rain, sleet and snow are predicted.

The National Weather Service in Pontiac warns that roadways are expected "to be ice-covered and slippery Tuesday night and Wednesday, making Wednesday morning's commute "hazardous or impossible."

Just when we thought winter might finally be a memory, a late-season winter storm is threatening to barrel through southeastern Michigan, bringing with it snow, sleet and a half inch or more of ice.

The storm is expected to move through the region Tuesday night and into Wednesday, blanketing the region with a wintry mix of precipitation and potentially large amounts of icing.

A winter storm watch is in effect from Tuesday evening through Wednesday evening, and some areas north of Detroit could get as much as 6 inches of snow in addition to large amounts of ice.

"Significant icing of power lines and tree limbs is possible Tuesday night and Wednesday," reports the National Weather Service in Pontiac. Roads may become icy and slippery beginning Tuesday night, which could make Wednesday morning's commute especially dangerous.

Precipitation will begin as rain Tuesday evening and will soon transition to freezing rain, sleet and snow Tuesday night. Precipitation may become heavier late Tuesday and into Wednesday morning.
