UPDATED: Polls 'Very Slow' in Oakland Township
Some residents are expressing concern that taxpayer money is being wasted on today's Lake Orion School Board election.
In Oakland Township, voter turnout for today's Lake Orion School Board election has been "very slow," said poll worker Sheila Menig, who was in charge of running the polling place for Precinct 2 at Woodlands Mobile Home Estates.
By 4:15 p.m., only 24 out of a registered 804 voters had cast their ballot at the precinct, not including absentee ballots. At Delta Kelly elementary school, only 15 of a registered 766 voters in Oakland Township's 8th Precinct had cast their ballot by 3 p.m., not counting absentee ballots.
Menig said they went more than an hour without seeing a voter this afternoon, and she hoped more voters would show up after work.

"Most of the day, we've been sitting here talking to each other, reading books, doing crossword puzzles, you know, things like that," said Marion Middleton, a poll worker at the 2nd Precinct in Oakland Township.
Some poll workers expressed concern that taxpayer dollars are being wasted on today's election, especially with the low voter turnout.

"People come in, and they thank us for doing this job, and they think we're volunteering, but we're not," said Middleton. "We get paid for this day, and we're paid quite well."
"If they would hold this election in November, there would be zero cost to the school board instead of the $134,000 they put out for these two elections," said poll worker Jim Menig, referring to for a proposed $25.5 million school bond. "People need to put a little pressure on the school board to not hold these special elections."
Results from today's school board election are not yet available.
